girls in robotics leadership campersSolano County Office of Education, in partnership with UC Davis C-STEM (Computing-Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), hosts free C-STEM Girls in Robotics Leadership Camps (GIRL) in Solano County. The camps have expanded across the county thanks to support from Genentech, Valero Benicia Refinery, Soroptimist International Central Solano chapter, the Center for Freedom and Flight, Benicia Makerspace, Solano Community College and private donors.

Numerous studies and surveys have noted that the C-STEM fields have remained predominantly male with low participation among women. Our GIRL camps were focused on motivating young women to learn computing and STEM concepts through a fun and exciting robotics and Arduino based curriculum. GIRL campers learn robotics, develop code, invent products, and explore college and career paths with female mentors from within C-STEM fields.

C-STEM GIRL+ Camp focus on motivating young women in high school entering the 10th, 11th and 12th grade to learn computing and STEM concepts through a fun and exciting robotics and Arduino based curriculum.

SCOE hopes this leadership camp will enable girls to serve as leaders and inspire other girls to gain interest in science and technology through creating and joining robotics clubs in their schools and participating in the RoboPlay Competition on C-STEM Day. Attendance is FREE for camp participants. The camp participants are also eligible for the Girl’s Leadership Award.

Girls Who Code (GWC) is a nonprofit organization working to close the gender gap in technology.  SCOE partners with GWC for the Solano County Girls Who Code Club. The Solano County GWC Club members are composed of middle school and high school girls from all over Solano County who attended SCOE’s Girls In Robotics Leadership (GIRL) camps in previous years. Leadership sessions, women in tech and other fun activities in addition to coding are the focus of each GWC Club meeting.
