Solano Youth Leadership Institute
The Solano Youth Leadership Institute (SYLI) is a dynamic 5-day summer program designed to empower high school students to become leaders, advocates, and changemakers in their communities.
Led by experts in public health, youth development, and community advocacy, SYLI provides students with hands-on learning experiences, real-world skills, and opportunities to engage directly with decision-makers.
Participants will:
- Build leadership and public speaking skills
- Explore real-world public health and social issues
- Learn how to create and lead community impact projects
- Connect with peers and professionals across Solano County
- Travel to the California State Capitol to meet with policymakers
Graduates receive a Youth Advocate Certification and ongoing opportunities to lead prevention and advocacy efforts during the school year.

SYLI is grounded in two powerful youth development models:
Positive Youth Development (PYD)
An approach that focuses on building on young people’s strengths and creating opportunities for meaningful engagement in their communities, schools, and peer groups.
Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR)
A hands-on, social justice–focused approach where youth learn to research real issues, analyze root causes, and take action to create change in their communities.
