Girls Who Code (GWC) is a nonprofit organization working to close the gender gap in technology. SCOE partners with GWC for the Solano County Girls Who Code Club. The Solano County GWC Club members are composed of middle school and high school girls from all over Solano County who attended SCOE’s Girls In Robotics Leadership (GIRL) camps in previous years. Leadership sessions, women in tech and other fun activities in addition to coding are the focus of each GWC Club meeting.

Club Project: This year's project is in collaboration with UC Berkeley and the International Astronomical Search Collaboration (IASC) to support the search and discovery of asteroids and making important observations of near-Earth objects. We will have several activities, including leadership sessions, women in tech, and other fun activities in addition to coding in Python!

All club meetings are via Zoom on Saturday, except for the required first kick-off session (NEW this year) and last session which will be in-person events (students may only miss one session, not the first or final culminating event, to ensure they have enough support to complete their projects). As a virtual community, we expect our students to have their cameras on to engage and connect with one another- just as if we were in-person.

Session Dates:
1. * November 7, 2026, Club Kick Off- in-person, Solano County Office of Education (5100 Business Center Drive, Fairfield), 9am-1pm.

The longer, in-person session will ensure we all have the software downloaded, troubleshoot any tech issues with your laptops, and begin the training to get hands-on experience analyzing real telescope imagery, tracking objects in space, and potentially discovering brand-new near-Earth asteroids!

2. December 5, 2026 (virtual, 10am-12pm)
3. January 2027 (winter break, no session)
4. February 6, 2027 (virtual, 10am-12pm)
5. March 6, 2027 (virtual, 10am-12pm)
6. April 3, 2027 (virtual, 10am-12pm)

7. * May 1, 2027, Culminating Event- in-person, Solano Community College, Fairfield, at the STEAM Discovery Festival. Closer to the event, students will sign up for a morning or afternoon slot to present their projects. Families are welcome to join the FREE festival!

Virtual Office Hours (optional for more support): Begins 30 minutes before the virtual sessions, and 30 minutes after each virtual session. Additional office hours to give students more time to discover asteroids- Wednesdays, 3:30pm-4:30pm, 1/13/27 and 3/3/27.

Registration is due October 16, 2026. Filling out the form does not guarantee a spot. Slots are limited- please make sure to sign-up early!
